November/December Events 2008

“Pauline Tanner Day” a day to celebrate her life and service to the community will be held at the Village Offices on Park Avenue, Lacona on Sunday, December 7th at 2 PM. The community is invited to stop by and share fond memories with Pauline. We want to make this a FUN day for Pauline. Cake and punch will be served. Please mark your calendars! Pauline will be 98 years young on November 25th.

The 5th Annual Sandy Creek Youth Tree Decorating: These community minded youth groups work hard decorating trees for local families to enjoy during the upcoming holiday season. The Christmas trees will be decorated the week of November 10-14 and we ask that the community stop by the town hall November 17 through December 5 (during business hours 9am to 4pm) to vote for their “favorite tree.” A cookie and punch party is planned for all participants on Saturday, December 13th. The trees will be distributed by the youth groups the following week to elderly shut-ins or needy families. Call Charlene (387-5456 x 7) or Rae (387-3666) if you know of a family or elderly person in need of Christmas cheer! I take this opportunity to thank Rae Allen for her help and support with this yearly event. Much of the success of this event can be attributed to her efforts.

Revolutionary War Interpretive Unit to Dedicate Soldiers Resting Place! Saturday, May 31, 2008 we will remember and dedicate the burial place of two Revolutionary Soldiers, Stephen Lindsey and Jonathan Thrasher at Pioneer/Goodenough District Cemetery on Henderson Road (off NYS Rt. 3).

May 31st is the actual Memorial Day and we hope you can join us at this important memorial dedication. The Continental Arms Collectors Association’s Revolutionary War Interpretive Unit, headed by George Clark, reflects a company from the 1st NY Regiment, Continental Army circa 1782. They use 1779 Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States and they offer a first hand glimpse of our Nation's colorful military history.

The Continental Arms Collectors Association, Inc. was founded in 1982 as a Not-for-Profit educational organization. The mission: “to enhance public knowledge on the significance of firearms in American History.” The Revolutionary War Interpretive Unit was introduced in 1992 to further educate the public about daily life in the Continental Army. Extensive research culminated in the selection of accurate reproduction weapons, accoutrements, equipment, headgear, footwear, and clothing in use by the unit. The high standard for the group’s accurate performance of military drills and ceremonies, in use by the Continental Army during the latter part of the War of Independence, is a result of the intense training the unit is committed to.

The ceremony begins at 11am and will be under 1 hour. Other participants include the VFW and the DAR. Local family members from Sandy Creek, Florida, Michigan and Maryland will be in attendance.
